My life = Grey's Anatomy

Today, I drove out to Navasota to shadow an equine vet. I called ahead to get his schedule and they said he had 2 appointments starting at 1pm and then he had a surgery and that I could come out there for all of the above.

So I scarfed a big mac on the 20ish minute drive and showed up 10 minutes til 1 so that I wouldn't walk in during one of the appointments. The vet I shadow wasn't back from lunch and the receptionist told me to wait in the lobby and she'd let him know that I was there when he got back.

Well... an hour and 15 minutes later, I got up, walked outside, and went into the treatment barn to find the vet and his tech working on a horse. Thanks for nothing, receptionist. After I waited for an hour and 15 minutes, I watched 2 lameness exams (which I have seen before) and nothing was explained to me. After all of this, I had 3 minutes of small talk with the vet and then he told me he was going into surgery and that he would see me next week. I was under the impression that I was going to watch the surgery and I was really excited about it. Not the case.

Basically (and you can judge me all you want) I was feeling like Christina from Grey's Anatomy. You know, she's been bitching about not getting surgeries and not having a cardio expert for the past 3 weeks now. Well, that applies (kind of), but I'm referring more to the conversation she had when she basically asked to be cut because she isn't learning anything. I wasted my time today to not learn anything. How is this supposed to help me?

I'm at a point now where I need whatever edge I can get and need to know all that I can about large animal practice. If I can't learn it where I'm at, then I need to find someone who will teach me.

Yeah so this blog is boring... until now

Well, Fish Camp has come and gone.

I am now a proud uncle of a healthy baby boy named Charlie. He's 2 months old now...

I started grad school and it hasn't been an easy transition. I'm expected to keep up with graduate coursework while still living an undergraduate lifestyle. The one thing I can say for this semester is that I have truly enjoyed the time I have spent with my friends. I have had the time to reconnect, create, and further my relationships and I couldn't be happier about it. My friends keep me wanting to get up in the morning.

While I enjoy living in College Station and all of my friends associated with it, I have the overwhelming urge to get in my truck and drive to wherever I feel like stopping. It has always been a "bucket list" type dream of mine to do this. Get a job at a bar, live in a shitty apartment, and get back to the basics. Learn to live and have no expectations but my own.

Despite how enthralled all 0 of my followers are, I should probably get some sleep since it is 3AM and I need to stop this cycle of non-sleep.

Summer Retreat/Registration/Workday1

Well, its been a while since I posted, but I thought about it yesterday so here's an update.

Summer Retreat - It went over pretty well. It gave the chairs a good amount of time to work on their camp schedules and skit templates. Also, we revealed session directors. I'm the proud director of session E! Whoop! Session E 4 years running...

Registration - Still going strong. More people register every day... inputting files and keeping up with mail-in packets and scholarship applications. We are about to start our scholarship process (as soon as I figure out how that needs to work) and I suspect we'll start getting money in the mail soon for installment plans etc.

Workday 1 - was this weekend. I was there for a few hours each day and got to see the camp's banners etc. We had a few issues with vandalism, but luckily it was washable paint. Also this weekend we had our director retreat which was really good for the team. We had a discussion about our strengths from a leadership standpoint and our summer timeline up until camp.

My Strengths are as follows:
1. Adaptability
2. Strategic
3. Self-Assurance
4. Individualization
5. Maximizer

Updates Etc.

Two more days of registration under my belt.

Yesterday went well. We decided to add session changes to the website since so many people were having issues reading the directions or checking their schedules. It is up and running and more people are pleased with the process. I believe one person even called our system "archaic" because we wouldn't allow them to change their session availability until after they had been assigned. Whatever pleases the people.

Today was a little on the irritating side. I got to the office at 9am with starbucks in hand ready to have a productive and positive day... well, instead I answered phone calls and emails for 2.5 hours then had a surprise director meeting which lasted through lunch while 2 chairs didn't show for their office hours (which left no one to answer phones or return emails). Then, everyone and their dog came to the office so I finally got the chance to move down to my office and work on registration itself... even still I only got to print labels for mail-in packets before I went to go pick up the rental mini-vans for our summer retreat this weekend. I got very few of my tasks done, but someone has to take care of the main office.

I'm ready for summer retreat to just happen already. Its been a long time coming. Also, it will be good for me to see a great deal of the chairs that I haven't seen in a long time.

I swear one of these days I'll talk about something other than Fish Camp... but for now thats about all there is to my life. So, enjoy.

Stay classy, blogspot.

First Day of Registration - UPDATE

I didn't end up sleeping at all last night because I was too anxious/excited to sleep.

All the hard work paid off because today went so smoothly. Compared to years past, everyone was so impressed with how few problems occurred. No servers went down (although they were slow around 9:30 when EVERYONE was on our site), no one was charged multiple times, and we had very few angry phone calls (although we did have a few).

All in all, it was a success. As of now, there are over 2,500 freshmen who are complete and paid through the process. There are over 2,700 (including the ones before) who are in some stage of the process. When you think about our maximum number of almost 6,000, that is a tremendous amount of freshmen in one day. Its not completely off base from years past, it just blows me away how many people are so excited to go to Fish Camp even with the economy in its current state. This, however, is not a political blog.

For now, I'm going to sleep. I took a 4 hour nap earlier (since I didn't sleep last night), but that just won't cut it for the whole night.

Keep on keeping on.

First Day of Registration

Well, today is the day.

I should be asleep, but I can't seem to shut my eyes without thinking about the day ahead. Registration starts today. On the first day of registration last year, over 3,000 freshmen registered. I guess we'll see how 2009 works out.

We will have around 9 students and several staff members working from 8AM to 5PM to answer phone calls and checking/returning voicemails and emails. The online system is looking good and the new payment system assures that we will have no crashes or multiple charges.

I will post again later today after we get a final tally and with any major issues or accomplishments.
